A party, a party she said!

A party is where we’re going, I must calm my head,

Because that’s what mama said!

Oh, I do love a party, with cider and sparks, oh how I love a party!

A party, a party mama said,

Put on your nice velvet dress, you must only wear the best!

Comb your hair, paint your cheeks with rouge,

Do quiet yourself, for this is an important event.

A party, a party she had said.

Than why do all the pretty men and women seem so dead?

Nobody sings, threaded to their friends like strings,

Nobody dances, they only give shallow glances.

A party, a party mama said.

I tugged on a lady’s sleeve, and asked her where is the color in your dress,

She only shook her head.

Could she have been deaf?

A party, a party mama said.

Than why is everybody crying around a hunk of wood?

Did they drop their favorite toy?

It must be broken, for even the boys cry!

A party, a party mama said.

Then why, in that wooden box,

Lies my daddy, like a doll of the dead?

Is this a game? Can I play too? Maybe I shouldn’t, ‘cause when I asked mama, she just shook her head.

A party, a party mama said,

When we left, she did not speak,

And I sat quiet while I stared at my feet,

She sniffed and sobbed, and when my momma cries, I always cry along.
